Overview

Roo Code is an autonomous, open-source AI agent designed to code, debug, and evolve software with minimal human intervention. It functions as a virtual development team within the user's code editor, supporting various programming languages. The tool offers multiple modes of operation, including Code Mode for everyday coding tasks, Architect Mode for planning systems and specifications, Ask Mode for quick answers and explanations, Debug Mode for tracing issues, and Custom Modes for specialized team or workflow requirements. Roo Code can generate code from natural language descriptions, adapt to different working styles, refactor and debug existing code, write and update documentation, answer questions about the codebase, and automate repetitive tasks. The project was archived on May 15, 2026, and is no longer actively maintained. Users are directed to alternatives like ZooCode and Cline.

Years in this space

I've evaluated a lot of these over the years. What stands out here is the automation — handled better than most — and support is responsive. Worth the time if this is your use case.

Solid for our team

We rolled this out across the team last quarter and the value for money is strong. The automation fits neatly into how we already work, and the onboarding removed a step we used to do by hand. but it has held up under daily use.

Skeptical, then convinced

I went in skeptical — most tools in this space overpromise. It actually delivers on the integrations, and the value for money is strong caught me off guard. A few rough edges remain is why this isn't a perfect score, still, I'd recommend giving it a real trial.

Use it every day

Honestly didn't expect to like it this much. The core workflow is exactly what I needed, and it is genuinely easy to set up. I do wish pricing gets steep at scale, but I reach for it almost every day now and it just clicks.

Q&A

How much human oversight does Roo Code need?

Roo Code aims to operate with minimal human intervention, handling coding and debugging autonomously. However, for production use you should still review its output, since autonomous agents can make mistakes and may need guidance on complex or high-stakes tasks.

Is Roo Code free to use, and is the source code available?

Yes. Roo Code is open-source, so you can use, inspect, and modify the code freely. Check the project's repository for the specific license terms and any optional paid services.

What can Roo Code actually do as an autonomous agent?

Roo Code is designed to write, debug, and iteratively improve software with minimal human input. It functions as an autonomous AI coding agent, meaning it can take on development tasks and evolve them over time rather than just suggesting snippets.
