Overview

Animate any character with precise facial expressions and movements using Wan Animate's AI-powered character animation tool. This technology can animate any character based on a performer's video, or seamlessly replace characters in existing videos with holistic replication. Wan Animate works best with well-lit images and videos with visible facial expressions and body movements. To use the tool, upload your character image and a reference video, then select your preferred animation mode. Choose 'wan2.2 - Animate-move' to animate your character image with movements from the reference video, or 'wan2.2 - Animate-mix' to replace the character in the reference video with your character image while preserving the original environment and lighting. The Wan Animate framework uses spatially-aligned skeleton signals to replicate body motion and implicit facial features extracted from source images to reenact expressions, enabling the generation of character videos with high controllability and expressiveness. Additionally, for character replacement, Wan Animate includes an auxiliary Relighting LoRA module that preserves character appearance consistency while applying appropriate environmental lighting and color tone. The tool can be used to bring static character images to life, create animated content from reference performances, and generate expressive character animations with realistic facial expressions and body movements. Wan Animate excels at transforming static images into dynamic character animations and seamlessly integrating new characters with consistent lighting and color matching.

Use it every day

Honestly didn't expect to like it this much. Export of animated video clips is exactly what I needed, and fast character animation without manual rigging. I do wish complex scenes may show artifacts, but I reach for it almost every day now and it just clicks.

Solid for our team

We rolled this out across the team last quarter and supports character replacement in existing videos. Single-image character input fits neatly into how we already work, and export of animated video clips removed a step we used to do by hand. but it has held up under daily use.

Years in this space

I've evaluated a lot of these over the years. What stands out here is character replacement in source videos — handled better than most — and works from a single reference image. Limited fine-grained control over motion is my one real gripe. Worth the time if this is your use case.

Does the job

Pretty happy overall. Single-image character input just works and supports character replacement in existing videos. Limited fine-grained control over motion can be annoying, but no dealbreakers — I'd recommend it to a friend without hesitating.

Compared a few options

Evaluated this against two competitors. Where it wins: export of animated video clips and useful for short-form and social content. Where it lags: complex scenes may show artifacts. On balance the feature set — especially export of animated video clips — justifies the 5 stars for our use case.
