Skeptical, then convinced

I went in skeptical — most tools in this space overpromise. It actually delivers on focus modes for academic, video, and social sources, and free tier is genuinely useful caught me off guard. Advanced models require a paid Pro plan is why this isn't a perfect score, still, I'd recommend giving it a real trial.

Solid for our team

We rolled this out across the team last quarter and free tier is genuinely useful. Follow-up and threaded conversations fits neatly into how we already work, and real-time web retrieval removed a step we used to do by hand. Citations can occasionally misrepresent sources, which is the main caveat, but it has held up under daily use.

Compared a few options

Evaluated this against two competitors. Where it wins: browser extension and mobile apps and free tier is genuinely useful. Where it lags: advanced models require a paid Pro plan. On balance the feature set — especially browser extension and mobile apps — justifies the 5 stars for our use case.

Does the job

Pretty happy overall. Real-time web retrieval just works and cited answers make verification easy. but no dealbreakers — I'd recommend it to a friend without hesitating.

Q&A

How is Perplexity AI different from a regular search engine like Google?

Instead of returning a list of links, Perplexity answers your question directly in natural language and includes inline citations to the sources it used. You can ask follow-up questions to refine results, making it more conversational than traditional search.

Is there a free version, and what do I get by upgrading to Pro?

Yes, Perplexity offers a free tier that's genuinely useful for everyday search and fact-checking. Upgrading to the paid Pro plan unlocks access to more advanced AI models, which is helpful for deeper research tasks.

Can I trust the citations, and what are Perplexity's limitations for serious research?

Citations make verification easier, but they can occasionally misrepresent what the source actually says, so spot-checking is wise. For niche or highly specialized topics, dedicated research tools may provide more depth than Perplexity.
