Overview

Operator is an AI agent from OpenAI designed to carry out tasks on the web by interacting with a browser much like a person would. It can read pages, click buttons, fill forms, and navigate multi-step workflows, allowing users to delegate routine online activities such as booking, ordering, or research. Built on a vision-capable model, Operator interprets what it sees on screen and decides what to do next, pausing to ask for confirmation on sensitive actions like payments or logins. It is offered to higher-tier ChatGPT subscribers as a research preview, with safeguards intended to keep the agent within user-approved boundaries.

Solid for our team

We rolled this out across the team last quarter and backed by OpenAI's models and safety tooling. Vision-based page understanding fits neatly into how we already work, and multi-step task planning and execution removed a step we used to do by hand. but it has held up under daily use.

Years in this space

I've evaluated a lot of these over the years. What stands out here is multi-step task planning and execution — handled better than most — and handles multi-step web tasks end to end. Can be slow on complex workflows is my one real gripe. Worth the time if this is your use case.

Compared a few options

Evaluated this against two competitors. Where it wins: human-like browser interaction and works with most websites without custom integrations. On balance the feature set — especially saved tasks and prompt templates — justifies the 5 stars for our use case.

Use it every day

Honestly didn't expect to like it this much. Human-like browser interaction is exactly what I needed, and pauses for user confirmation on sensitive steps. but I reach for it almost every day now and it just clicks.
