Overview

A metronome is a tool for musicians that creates a steady, consistent pulse or beats to help you play with rhythmic accuracy. The speed of this pulse is measured in Beats Per Minute (BPM). Musicians use it to keep a consistent tempo during practice and to master challenging musical sections. The online metronome on this page is a free browser-based tool that allows users to set their desired tempo, which can be adjusted in several ways, including direct input, arrow buttons, and a start button. To use the metronome effectively, understanding time signatures is key. This refers to the pattern of rhythmic accents in music, typically represented by a time signature consisting of two numbers. The top number indicates the number of beats per measure, and the bottom number indicates the note value that gets one beat. A time signature is either simple or compound, and common examples include 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 for simple time, and 6/8, 9/8, and 12/8 for compound time, which gives the music a triplet feel. To practice difficult passages in a piece of music, one method is to slow down the metronome to a very slow tempo where the passage can be played perfectly without mistakes. Once this can be accomplished, the tempo can be increased gradually in small increments until the section can be played accurately at the target tempo. The goal is to internalize the pulse so that the music can be played with perfect timing even after the metronome is turned off.

Does the job

Pretty happy overall. Accessible from any device with a browser just works and no installation or signup required. but no dealbreakers — I'd recommend it to a friend without hesitating.

Use it every day

Honestly didn't expect to like it this much. Clean, distraction-free layout is exactly what I needed, and no installation or signup required. I do wish limited advanced features compared to paid apps, but I reach for it almost every day now and it just clicks.

Skeptical, then convinced

I went in skeptical — most tools in this space overpromise. It actually delivers on suitable for all instruments and vocalists, and simple, beginner-friendly interface caught me off guard. Audio timing may depend on browser performance is why this isn't a perfect score, still, I'd recommend giving it a real trial.

Solid for our team

We rolled this out across the team last quarter and free and runs in any modern browser. Start and stop click playback fits neatly into how we already work, and start and stop click playback removed a step we used to do by hand. Limited advanced features compared to paid apps, which is the main caveat, but it has held up under daily use.
