Overview

Mastra is an open-source TypeScript framework for building AI-powered applications and agents. It provides a set of tools for developers to go from idea to implementation, including agents, workflows, memory, workspaces, and observability. Mastra integrates with various frontend and backend frameworks and can be deployed as a standalone server. It enables developers to build a range of capabilities, such as internal automation agents, customer-facing agents, and more. Mastra includes features like built-in observability, repeatable checks, and cacheable resumable streams. It is designed to support fast-scaling startups and large global organizations. Mastra's architecture is centered around agents, which can be defined with instructions, models, tools, and runtime behavior. Skeptical, then convinced

I went in skeptical — most tools in this space overpromise. It actually delivers on the dashboard, and it saves real time caught me off guard. still, I'd recommend giving it a real trial.

Skeptical, then convinced

I went in skeptical — most tools in this space overpromise. It actually delivers on the automation, and support is responsive caught me off guard. Pricing gets steep at scale is why this isn't a perfect score, still, I'd recommend giving it a real trial.

Solid for our team

We rolled this out across the team last quarter and support is responsive. The dashboard fits neatly into how we already work, and the dashboard removed a step we used to do by hand. The mobile experience lags, which is the main caveat, but it has held up under daily use.

Does the job

Pretty happy overall. The dashboard just works and it saves real time. The docs could be deeper can be annoying, but no dealbreakers — I'd recommend it to a friend without hesitating.

Q&A

What can I build with Mastra and what core capabilities does it provide?

Mastra is an open-source TypeScript framework for building AI agents, workflows, RAG (retrieval-augmented generation), memory, and MCP (Model Context Protocol) integrations. It's suited for developers creating agentic applications in TypeScript/JavaScript environments.

What's the learning curve, and is Mastra a good fit for non-TypeScript developers?

Mastra is a TypeScript-first framework, so it's best suited to developers comfortable with TypeScript/JavaScript. Teams working primarily in Python or other languages may find it less convenient than language-native alternatives.

Is Mastra free, and what does the optional cloud offering include?

The core framework is open-source, so you can self-host it freely. Mastra also offers an optional cloud studio and observability layer for teams that want managed tooling and monitoring, though specific pricing isn't listed here.
