Overview

GritQL is a declarative query language for searching and modifying source code. It starts with minimal requirements without learning AST details, allowing any code snippet to be a valid query. GritQL is scalable and can handle large repositories, with support for over 10 million lines of code. The language is versatile and supports various programming languages, including JavaScript, Python, Java, and others. GritQL excels in automating tasks such as large-scale migrations, custom linting, and code quality improvements. It includes a built-in module system, auto-fix rules, and where clauses for selective pattern application. Examples of using GritQL include searching patterns, enforcing custom lints, and systematically improving code quality. Grit offers an interactive tutorial for learning GritQL step-by-step.

Use cases

Framework Version Upgrades

Automate upgrades across major framework versions by applying AI-assisted rewrites to many repositories at once, reducing the manual effort of breaking-change migrations.

API Migration at Scale

Migrate codebases from deprecated APIs or libraries to new ones using custom patterns and AI reasoning, with changes delivered as reviewable pull requests.

Tech Debt Cleanup

Identify and remove legacy patterns or dead code across multiple repos by authoring rewrite rules and running them in batch through CI integrations.

Enforcing Code Standards

Apply consistent coding conventions and standards across an entire organization's codebase using custom rules executed through familiar Git workflows.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Scales refactors across many repositories
  • Combines deterministic patterns with AI reasoning
  • Integrates with standard Git and PR workflows
  • Useful for framework and dependency upgrades

Cons

  • Primarily aimed at engineering teams, not general users
  • Complex migrations may still need manual review
  • Learning curve for writing custom patterns

Years in this space

I've evaluated a lot of these over the years. What stands out here is custom pattern and rule authoring — handled better than most — and scales refactors across many repositories. Complex migrations may still need manual review is my one real gripe. Worth the time if this is your use case.

Solid for our team

We rolled this out across the team last quarter and scales refactors across many repositories. Pull request generation and review fits neatly into how we already work, and custom pattern and rule authoring removed a step we used to do by hand. Primarily aimed at engineering teams, not general users, which is the main caveat, but it has held up under daily use.

Does the job

Pretty happy overall. Custom pattern and rule authoring just works and useful for framework and dependency upgrades. but no dealbreakers — I'd recommend it to a friend without hesitating.

Skeptical, then convinced

I went in skeptical — most tools in this space overpromise. It actually delivers on support for major programming languages, and useful for framework and dependency upgrades caught me off guard. still, I'd recommend giving it a real trial.
