Overview

Convai is a platform and SDK for creating real-time conversational NPCs in games and virtual worlds. It offers voice, vision, and action APIs for integration with Unity and Unreal Engine. The platform allows developers to craft 3D AI characters that can interact through natural language and realistic behaviors within virtual environments. These characters possess multimodal perception, enabling them to see and hear their surroundings and respond with human-like dialogue, voice, gestures, and contextually appropriate actions. Convai's platform is designed to be intuitive and easy to use, with no-code creation tools and comprehensive support for developers. It powers XR worlds with conversational AI through both virtual humans and disembodied AI characters, enabling deeply interactive and immersive experiences. The platform is rated #1 by developers and is used in various applications, including XR training simulations, social virtual worlds, and role-play AI avatars.

Compared a few options

Evaluated this against two competitors. Where it wins: the integrations and the value for money is strong. On balance the feature set — especially the API — justifies the 5 stars for our use case.

Skeptical, then convinced

I went in skeptical — most tools in this space overpromise. It actually delivers on the core workflow, and the value for money is strong caught me off guard. The mobile experience lags is why this isn't a perfect score, still, I'd recommend giving it a real trial.

Years in this space

I've evaluated a lot of these over the years. What stands out here is the dashboard — handled better than most — and it saves real time. Worth the time if this is your use case.

Solid for our team

We rolled this out across the team last quarter and the value for money is strong. The API fits neatly into how we already work, and the automation removed a step we used to do by hand. but it has held up under daily use.

Years in this space

I've evaluated a lot of these over the years. What stands out here is the automation — handled better than most — and it is genuinely easy to set up. A few rough edges remain is my one real gripe. Worth the time if this is your use case.
