Overview

Continue was an open-source AI code assistant that integrates with IDEs to provide real-time code autocompletion and chat functionalities. Its mission was to amplify developers rather than automate them. It was acquired by Cursor. The tool enabled developers to work with an AI-powered assistant directly in their Integrated Development Environment (IDE), providing suggestions and support in real-time. The project's open-source codebase is still maintained, and it continues to serve as a foundation for others to build upon. Continue aimed to change the landscape of developer tooling by introducing innovative AI-powered features. However, the specific details of its functionality and impact are somewhat limited due to the lack of information on its official website. The project's focus on collaboration with developers and its open-source nature suggest its value lies in its ability to empower developers and foster a community. Despite the lack of explicit information on how Continue works, its features can be inferred from its presence in the IDE and its open-source codebase. The tool likely relies on natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning algorithms to analyze and understand code, providing suggestions and assistance accordingly. In terms of its strengths, Continue's focus on community and open-source development make it stand out. Its ability to integrate with IDEs and provide real-time support also make it a valuable asset for developers. However, the specific limitations and trade-offs of Continue are not well-documented.

Years in this space

I've evaluated a lot of these over the years. What stands out here is the onboarding — handled better than most — and the value for money is strong. Worth the time if this is your use case.

Use it every day

Honestly didn't expect to like it this much. The integrations is exactly what I needed, and it is genuinely easy to set up. I do wish the docs could be deeper, but I reach for it almost every day now and it just clicks.

Solid for our team

We rolled this out across the team last quarter and it is genuinely easy to set up. The onboarding fits neatly into how we already work, and the integrations removed a step we used to do by hand. The docs could be deeper, which is the main caveat, but it has held up under daily use.

Compared a few options

Evaluated this against two competitors. Where it wins: the API and it is genuinely easy to set up. Where it lags: a few rough edges remain. On balance the feature set — especially the API — justifies the 5 stars for our use case.

Skeptical, then convinced

I went in skeptical — most tools in this space overpromise. It actually delivers on the API, and it saves real time caught me off guard. still, I'd recommend giving it a real trial.
